'Sustainability' can be a little overused and sometimes a bit misleading, so we follow Kaitiakitanga.
Kaitiakitanga is about guardianship and protection of the environment. This isn't just something for Māori but all humans who actually care about their impact now and into the future.
As tangata whenua, Māori believe in taking care of the environment not just now, but for future generations. That's why we care about where we get our kākahu.
85% OF FAST FASHION ENDS UP IN LANDFILL. YUCK.
Traditional fashion production often results in overstock, with reports that out of all textiles made each year, 85% end up in landfill or incinerated. That's crazy!
Approx. 180,000 tonnes of textile and clothing waste is being dumped in New Zealand landfills every year. This is about 34kg each year for every person living in New Zealand!
So how do we make a change and not add to the pile?
We start by ensuring we only sell high-quality, durable clothes. They'll last longer and that means you'll wear them longer too.
We also offer a pre-order model to help reduce our waste. By pre-ordering you help us reduce overproduction and we only produce what's needed.
By producing only what's needed, we can reduce waste, improve quality, support fair labour practices, all while saving some money. Nice!
Not sure about you, but we like the sound of that.
You can read more about our pre-ordering system here.
All of our garments are made in India and Bangladesh.
The printing is done right here in Ōtautahi, Christchurch by another small family run business.
Each piece we make has the OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 label and have Platinum WRAP Certification.
These are incredibly important not only for the quality but also the working conditions they were made under.
OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100.
This means you can have full confidence that every component, down to the smallest thread, button, and accessory (even the heat set print), has undergone rigorous testing to ensure the absence of harmful substances.
This means our clothes are harmless to your health.
Platinum WRAP Certification.
Our apparel also has a Platinum WRAP Certification, ensuring our garments are made under safe, lawful, and humane conditions.
More than 90% of WRAP-certified facilities hold the gold standard certification, but facilities that have demonstrated full compliance through three consecutive audits are awarded platinum level certification.
So, platinum certification is quite a big deal.
